The University School of Jackson’s girls soccer team defeated Grace Christian Academy 7-0 in the state quarterfinals and is headed to state to strive for another State Championship. The team, coached by Paul Conway, Briamst Castro, Leah Blackburn and Matt Pledger, performed incredibly well in the game against GCA with four goals from Morgan English, one from Betha Pucek, one from Mia Powell, and one from Caroline Conder. The goal keeper, Lilly Kate Varino, and the defense also played very well with a shutout.
In the state semifinals, the Lady Bruins will be facing Silverdale, who beat St. George’s 3-1 in overtime. Their chances for winning the semi finals are looking very promising because of their regional championship win against St. George’s 7-1. If they win the semi finals, they will proceed to play either Boyd Buchanan School or Battle Ground Academy.
Morgan English, a team captain, believes the team has a good chance because of the “chemistry we have, especially the senior group,” and because they are “all passionate about the game and love each other so much.” English is committed to Mississippi State University to further pursue her soccer career. She is the leading goal scorer for USJ with over 150 goals.
